Chiefs crowned champs of Gauteng

Kaizer Chiefs won the inaugural Gauteng challenge which featured Supersport united, Bidvest Wits and Moroka Swallows.
Chiefs defeated the Dube birds 3:0 in the semi-finals to book a place in the finals. The clever boys edged past Supersport united 1:0 in another semi-finals clash to progress to the finals. Amakhosi took on Wits in the finals, in a match which had no goals in regulation time. Both teams got chances to score but they did not make use of them. The match went on penalties and Chiefs walked away 8-7 winners to be crowned Gauteng challenge champions. This was the first match for Chiefs new mentor, Stuart Baxter in charge. Baxter made use of his new signings which included Kgotso Moleko and Erick Mathoho. Chiefs have given their fans something to brag about after they had failed to win a single cup last season, under the guidance of Serbian, Vladimir Vermezović. Even though, it’s an off-season cup, many faithful fans hope it will motivate the players to get geared up for what looks like a tough season ahead. On Saturday, Amakhosi will lock horns with their bitter rivals Orlando pirates in the second edition of the Carling Black Label cup which will be staged at Soccer City.

His desire to play Champions League football saw him leave for Tottenham Hotspur in January last year, but injury and a reluctance from then boss Harry Redknapp to select him meant he did not make a single league start for Spurs.
